Nov 6th, 2021, Special Event Sale at Mays Mayhew Studio Gallery
2525 Coach and Surrey Ln Aurora, IL 60506
Saturday, Nov 6th, 12-5 pm CDT I’ll be doing a pop-up sale that will include the below pieces at sale prices, this is the only time I’ve done this, so if you’ve been waiting for the right moment to own one of my original paintings, there is no better time.
OH WAIT, ALSO I should mention that if you join my mailing list online or in-person before Nov 30th, you will be entered in a drawing to win a 16”x12” original painting. So you should definitely do that.
These first two are 40” x 40” x 1.5” paintings on stretched canvas.
”THAT STYLE” features sprayed candy red over a silver base, and with a light shining on her she practically glows - making her a real trick to photograph but in real life is super fun. The gold leaf stripes harken to the double yellow lines on a highway. With the portrait of fellow local artist Jacqueline and a strong graphic look, it oozes Lynch-esque-rocker-gearhead coolness.
”beware of thoughts that are not your own” has become a signature piece, boasting pearl and metal flake automotive paints, the subtle subversion of a madonna-inspired image, and a simple enough warning that doesn't take much explaining. Fun fact, this planted the seed for the series of halo paintings that are getting noticed by the press and collectors.
The following pieces are 24” x 24” x 1.5” on stretched canvas
”beware of thoughts that are not your own” (24”) this is one of the first paintings I did in this style and it definitely got folks excited about my process. She is made (like most of my paintings) by using intricately cut stencils and spraying paints, then repeating this process for all color layers.
”Anna in Teal“ uses the modern tradition of fold painting, which I used as a ground for a cut one-time-use stencil (all my stencils are one-time use) and then sprayed with pearl automotive paints on textured linen.
”can we admit some lies we’ve told each other” makes extensive use of pearl, candy, and metal flake sprayed automotive paints and while this doesn’t show up on this typical “documentation style photo of the painting”, I really encourage you to click into the photo and watch the accompanying video to get a better idea of what this lovely piece looks like. You can see my personal symbol vocabulary strength, again cementing the halo as an element I will continue to work with.
Carina in vinyl is a unique piece as most of the figure is built up of carefully constructed transparent vinyl strips and my first-time layering very very thick (in this case) acrylic medium between every layer that gives the viewer a unique ability to see into the painting.
Raised on American Promises - 24" is perhaps the most detailed painting. The text laid across the face is me reconciling that the things we were taught as children. EG: “anyone can be anything they want” and that “racism and sexism is a thing of the past” that only very old, stupid believe and when they die it will be gone from the planet. The text itself is a paraphrasing of the late, great Tom Petty song American Girl.
”First One to Show any Sign of Discomfort Loses” is very unique as well as it’s my only piece that is using a photo as a collage design element.
”Let's Live the Way We Wanted and Hope They Go Away” is another piece featuring local artist, Jacqueline, as my model and features a rich gradient and a real vaporwave vibe.
”Some Nights She is a Pharmacist”: “this party we are going to, I think she’ll have something for your pain.” (songwriter Craig Finn is my guru)
AND SILVER BUTTONS ALL DOWN HER BACK was a goal to once again abstract the figure, this time as if Saul Bass had painted it. And then to make the render interesting to me and my material fetish I used flocking for the shape of the corset and the letters were created by cutting thin sheets of aluminum, stacking and painting them with a purple candy. Are you reciting the nursery rhyme yet?
SOME SETTLING MAY OCCUR: once again, like all the work at varying levels, photography doesn’t really tell you the story of this piece. This whole painting has a glowing sheen of candied paint over a reflective base that is a treat to invite the viewer to look a little closer while the metaphor slowly creeps in.
”We're Scared Then We're Brave” color is made of heavy use of transparent and metal flake paint, and then on the top layer, the text is laid in opaquely with silica giving a super satisfying tactile finish.
”I WANT TO SEE YOU LOSE CONTROL” was inspired in part by those vintage Martin Denny records and the model on the covers “Sandy Warner”. The painting itself HAS IT ALL, gradients, candies, pearls, metal flakes, and silica on the top layer of black. This one feels both very photographic while also a strong study of graphic design.
These final 2 showpieces are around 12” inches square.
”if i could just get on the road” is my first time working with 2 perspectives in a single painting and has a large close up type view of a road rendered in flake (super sparkly), and then on top is this sorta birds-eye view abstraction of headlights. The two perspectives are separatedd by a glossy resin layer. As you might expect, this piece was done in the year and a half between the stay-home order and me finally getting the vaccine.
”as much as I can get” is a little painting of a safe, there is something about the idea of a painting of a safe on a wall that cracks me up when I think of all those old movies where there is a safe behind a painting. While the painting is called “as much as I can get”, the words on the safe simply say “enough?”.
”there’s something in the trunk and i think it’s still alive” has some depth in real life and is loaded with personality. the cradled board has silver leaf surrounding it so it feels finished without needing a frame. and the alternating layers of resin, transparent vinyl and metallic paint give a pop.
Ok guys there might be one more piece coming we’ll see if the painting gnomes get it done in time and will be another very reasonably priced item as well and I’m pretty excited about her… so stay tuned.
If you know you want one of these and don’t want someone else to snatch it up, email, DM, or call me and I’ll tell you about the discounts.
OK, I’LL SEE YOU ON NOV 6TH.
